(1) The effects of the institution of intellectual property rights (IPRs) on incentive and efficiency of R&D. How does market competition affect licensing? How do IPRs affect the efficiency of the diffusion and innovation of technical standard? How has the "pro-patent" policy in Japan affected innovations? What are the appropriate standards for patentability?
(2) Determinants of R&D productivity. How important are the demand side and supply side factors as determinants of R&D productivity? How does R&D management strategy such as contract research to university affect R&D productivity?
